Career

After initial training in my native Scotland, my career was centred in the Netherlands, where I retain an honorary position. I am now based in Portugal and am a researcher in the ILTEC institute in Lisbon. Throughout my career, I have been actively collaborated with universities and research centres across Europe. At the same time, I worked to advance the cause of English Studies in the Netherlands and Europe: as Chair of the Netherlands Society for English Studies for 6 years, as co-organizer of two editions of the Dutch National Congress on English (for schoolteachers), and from 2002 to 2007 as Treasurer and member of the Executive of ESSE, the European Society for the Study of English, a federation of 33 different national associations.
